For convenience, we consider three "stages" in/across an idealized subduction zone (in this case, we arbitrarily elect to portray relevant processes on a sketch of an ocean-ocean arc-trench system), recognizing that dominant processes are likely to vary among individual modern convergent margins. This approach doubtless simplifies what is probably a continuum.
