Details on the field trip and suggested clothing:
The field trip on Tuesday, August 22 will leave from the Hilton Hotel at
8:30 a.m. The trip will be led by Dr. Rick Conrey, Washington State University,
and will traverse approximately 270 miles east of Eugene in a circular route
through the western Cascades and into the High Cascades in the vicinity
of McKenzie Pass, the town of Sisters, and the Three Sisters and Mt. Jefferson
Wilderness Areas. The elevation at McKenzie Pass is a bit higher than 5000
feet. Participants will be provided with a detailed field trip guide, complete
with appropriate maps, cross-sections, chemical analyses etc, as well as
with a box lunch and a mid-afternoon snack. Comfortable shoes are suggested
as all stops are near the road and no heavy hiking will be required. The
weather in Oregon in August is usually clear and warm and insects are not
normally a problem. A day pack with sunglasses, a water bottle, camera,
extra film, sunscreen, hat, and a light jacket is recommended. Rain is always
a possibility but at this time of year it is very remote--we have not had
any precipitation for two months. A more likely problem could be smoke from
forest fires. Central Oregon has been spared thus far this fire season but
that could change.
Meeting facility:
The meeting room is 110 Willamette Hall, near the center of the UO campus
on 13th Avenue between University Street and Agate Street. The poster
session/cocktail receptions and meeting dinner will be in Cascade Hall,
the geology department's main building, which is immediately to the west
of Willamette Hall and to the north of the Volcanology Building. Van shuttles
will drop people off and pick people up on 13th Avenue in front of Willamette
Hall.
