Miguel Etayo

I am Miguel Etayo from Colombia in South America. All my life I have been interested in understanding other cultures and I am particularly interested in the more ancient ones.

I finished my Geology BS. from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2003, where I conducted research into the relationship between the Bogotá River and prehispanic raised-fields (similar to those found in Peru, called waru-waru in Quechua).

During that research I realized that climate was the main key to understand why the river location was chosen by the Muiscas (the prehispanic settlers).

Two years after my BS. degree I had the great opportunity to come to the University of Alabama to study for a M.S. in geology focused on paleoclimate with Dr. Fred Andrus.

My research is going to be in Peru (South America) with stable and radio- isotopes of oxygen and carbon extracted from modern and ancient bivalve shells and use that information as proxy for deep water upwelling. The goal is to better understand the history of El Niño.

I like to read fantasy literature, where my favorite authors are Tolkien and Ende. I have great interest in world history especially ancient cultures. I also like anime.
