Eugene Allen Smith


Promoted increased understanding of Alabama’s mineral resources and geologic history. Native of Washington, AL. Education: 1862 UA Alumnus; 1868 Ph.D., University of Heidelberg, Germany. Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at UA 1871-1913. State geologist 1873-1913. President of the American Geological Society 1913. Author of over 100 publications, including a monumental study on the Cretaceous and Tertiary formations of the Gulf Coast. Produced a highly accurate geologic map of the State and was instrumental in the development of the state's mineral wealth.
