Scholarships

Application Procedure

A separate application must be submitted for each scholarship program that is applied for. A letter of recommendation from a Department of Geological Sciences faculty member is required for students currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate programs of the Department of Geological Sciences. A single recommendation letter, which includes currently available support, is sufficient for each applicant.

Signed application forms should be submitted to The DGS Fellowship & Scholarship Committee, c/o B. Fagen, 202 Bevill Building, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0338. Applications must be submitted (or postmarked) by 4:00 PM, April 23, 2008, for start dates beginning Summer, 2008. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Geological Sciences Advisory Board Scholarship

The Geological Sciences Advisory Board Student Scholarship Fund was established to support high-quality students in the Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama. Funding for these awards is provided by the Geological Sciences Advisory Board, a group of distinguished alumni and friends who play an active role in the advancement of the Department. As many as ten $2,000 scholarships are awarded each year to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the Geological Sciences.

Criteria & Applications: Minimum 3.0 GPA (high school or UA) and minimum ACT score of 24 or SAT score of 1170 for entering high school students. Graduate students must submit a proposal and should have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 and a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of greater than or equal to 1200. The awards may be renewed, with satisfactory academic progress (GPA of 3.0 or greater) in the degree program.

 

Phillip E. and Bunnie LaMoreaux Foreign Geology Student Scholarship

The Philip E. and Bunnie LaMoreaux Foreign Geology Student Scholarship Fund honors the commitment of Dr. and Mrs. LaMoreaux to the education of international students in the Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama. An endowment established to honor Philip E. and Bunnie LaMoreaux provides funding. Dr. LaMoreaux is an internationally recognized hydrogeologist who raised interest in hydrogeology and environmental geology throughout the world. The fund provides support for educational and research activities of international students working toward a degree in the Department. The first award was presented in the spring of 1993 and the names of recipients are engraved on a permanent plaque.

The award is available to both undergraduate and graduate students, though preference is given to graduate students. Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled at the University of Alabama and are requested to provide a copy of their academic transcript along with a one-page statement of their research objectives and a discussion of how the funding will help them accomplish their objectives. Awards are typically between $1,000 and $1,500.

Jen-Ho Fang Geology Student Scholarship

The Fang Geology Student Scholarship Fund honors the commitment of Dr. Jen-ho Fang to education and research in the Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama. An endowment established to honor Dr. Fang provides funding. Dr. Fang is a noted mineralogist who provided critical leadership during the Department’s transition to a major research program. Dr. Fang championed the expansion of a new Ph.D. program and promoted increased research activities by the faculty and students. The mineral Fangite was named in his honor by a former student. Dr. Fang was Professor of Geology from 1982-1997, and Chair of the Department between 1982-1991. A $3,000 scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student majoring in Geological Sciences.

Wallace Johnson Geology Student Scholarship

The Wallace C. Johnson Geology Student Scholarship Fund was established to honor University of Alabama supporter Wallace C. Johnson. Family and friends of Mr. Johnson contributed to create the fund. The endowment provides funding for a scholarship that is awarded each year to an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student majoring in Geological Sciences. Priority is given to the funding of field-based learning and research by undergraduate students.

Graduate students must submit a proposal and should have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 and a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of greater than or equal to 1200.

 

W. Gary Hooks Endowed Geology Fund


The W. Gary Hooks Endowed Geology Fund was established in recognition of the outstanding contributions of Dr. W. Gary Hooks and to supplement the research, teaching, and service programs of the Department of Geological Sciences. In addition to the standard application materials,  applications for the W. Gary Hooks Endowed Geology Fund must include a brief proposed budget.
